Introduction to TransCore Readers

Before diving into the code side of things, it helps to get an understanding of what exactly a TransCore reader is.

TransCore readers are long range RFID reader units that are designed to read wireless tag protocols over the air, specifically designed for windshield mount tags.

Applications

These units are all around the world, and are commonly used in tollbooths, apartments, government properties, and more.

Residential

It is common to find TransCore readers in large gated communities that have dedicated resident lanes that allow authorized users to pull up to the gate and enter nearly instantly. In cities where most commuters have toll stickers, setups like these are even more common and easy to use as it requires virtually no setup on behalf of the users.

Highways

TransCore readers also provide means of efficient billing on toll roads. These are especially common within the state of Texas' NTTA tollway system.

End User Setup

Typical setup to get enrolled into a tag-based entry system is as follows:

  1. The user registers their tag type and ID with property management, or requests a new tag to be provided.
  2. If needed, the user places the tag on the vehicle, typically in a corner of the windshield.
  3. The user may now pull up to any connected TransCore reader for successful authentication and entry to the property.

Advantages

Long-range RFID system are widely used because they work in almost all weather conditions, are fast, and the management can create, edit, and remove valid tags on the fly at any time without needing to open up hardware on-site or provide users physical access control peripherals.
